Two ladders
A sugya is an argument, and an argument has a shape. Sulam names the move each beat makes - a source, a claim, a probe, a resolution - so you can follow the reasoning instead of drowning in it. Vocalized Aramaic beside Steinsaltz's English, and Rashi a tap away.
The mechanic every day-school kid was taught: what's bothering Rashi? You reason toward the difficulty in the verse first, and only then meet his resolution. Hebrew with nikud beside a clear translation, verse by verse, aliyah by aliyah.
The argument spine
A learner who doesn’t yet know where an argument is going can at least see that this is the objection and the next beat is the answer. That is the skill a daf actually teaches, and it is the thing a page of Vilna type hides.
So the reader gives you one tick per beat, coloured by the move it makes. Blank ahead of you, so nothing is spoiled. Filled behind you, so the passage’s shape - claim, objection, answer, objection, resolution - becomes visible as you walk it.

The mechanic
Rashi almost never explains what a verse means. He explains what a verse doesn’tmean, or what doesn’t sit right in it. Find the difficulty first and his answer stops being a fact to memorize and starts being a resolution you were waiting for.
